TikTok Launches Community-Led "Must Eat" Dining Guide, Ramping Up Competition With Yelp and Google Maps
For years, TikTok has reigned as the internet’s most beloved unexpected hub for uncovering underrated local hidden gems, with viral food clips driving massive surges of new foot traffic to small neighborhood restaurants that would have never stood out on traditional review platforms. Now, the short-form video app is rolling out a dedicated new tool to eliminate all friction from finding your next favorite meal: a feature dubbed Must Eat.
Unveiled this past Wednesday, the new community-powered dining hub aggregates all the most buzzed-about U.S. restaurants gaining traction on the platform, compiling organic user food recommendations into a single, easily navigable space. The launch marks TikTok’s formal, full-step entry into the crowded local discovery space, putting it in far more direct competition with longstanding dining and navigation platforms including Yelp and Google Maps.
But unlike its established competitors, TikTok is not building its new offering around static search algorithms, basic map data, or formal, often incentivized written reviews. Instead, it is leaning entirely into the core strength it has cultivated for years: authentic, peer-shared dining suggestions that real users post organically to their feeds every day.
Core Functionalities of the "Must Eat" Tool
The entire recommendation dataset for the new guide is pulled from more than 40 million public TikTok posts and user comments, which the platform organizes into browsable restaurant listings and themed curated lists. Users can explore all available spots sorted by city, and apply custom filters to narrow results by cuisine type, price tier, aggregate user rating, and exact proximity, making it simple to compare multiple nearby options before locking in plans for a meal out.
All listings are split into two distinct, user-focused categories:
Everyday Eats: Curates casual, low-fuss favorites, regular neighborhood haunts, and reliable quick bites for weeknight meals or casual meetups
Elevated Dining: Highlights higher-end, special-occasion spots perfect for birthday dinners, anniversaries, or a planned night out on the town
The platform has also integrated seamless booking functionality via OpenTable for all participating partner restaurants, so users can lock in a reservation without ever leaving the TikTok app.
Initial Rollout Details
"Must Eat" is launching first as a pilot in three major U.S. metropolitan areas: New York City, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Users can access the feature through four different convenient entry points: a dedicated search bar shortcut, the app’s hyper-local content feed, individual restaurant profile pages, and the location tags attached to any TikTok that features a participating Must Eat venue.
