Reddit Launches TikTok-Inspired Dual "For You" Feed Layout to Drive Algorithmic Content Discovery

Reddit has become the latest major social platform to adopt the personalized "For You" feed format that TikTok first popularized, per an official company announcement published Wednesday.

Going forward, users will be presented with two distinct home feed options the moment they open the Reddit app or desktop site:

  • The "For You" feed: A dynamically curated stream that blends posts from communities users have already joined with hyper-tailored interest-based recommendations. Reddit states the feature is built to help users uncover relevant niche communities and active discussions they would likely never have encountered through their usual subscribed content alone.

  • The "Following" feed: A strictly curated, no-frills stream that only displays posts from the exact communities users have explicitly joined, with no external algorithmic content mixed in.

Reddit’s public framing of the update positions it as a tool to foster deeper connection, more active participation, and a stronger sense of belonging across its user base. The redesign also serves a clear secondary goal: the reimagined feed setup is intended to nudge users to engage with content far outside the tight bubble of communities they already follow. The shift also brings Reddit fully in line with the recommendation-driven experience that has become the industry standard across social media, where algorithmic curation dictates the vast majority of what end users see. With this launch, Reddit joins a long list of major platforms that have rolled out their own versions of "For You" style feeds, including Instagram, X, Threads, and Facebook.

The update is not without its critics, however. A large segment of long-time Reddit users prefers the old, focused experience of scrolling exclusively through posts from their subscribed communities, rather than having random recommended content inserted into their main feed. Many users who tested the new layout during its early beta phase have already voiced public frustration with the change.

Reddit has confirmed users retain full control over their feed preference: they can toggle freely between the "For You" and "Following" views at any time, and the platform will automatically load whichever feed a user last accessed on their next login. It is worth noting that while Reddit has long tested serving up posts from outside users’ subscribed communities, the new layout gives those algorithmic recommendations a dedicated, high-visibility spot on the homepage rather than sprinkling them invisibly into the old default feed.

“This new feed experience is a first step in helping drive discovery that leads to something novel and relevant – an idea, a connection, a unique perspective, or even a new interest,” the company explained in an official blog post. “A more human internet is not just something you sit back and watch, it is something you find value in and want to participate in.”

The new dual-feed experience will roll out to all Reddit users globally in a phased release over the next few weeks.
