Dallas-Based Deep Tech Backer Disruptive Unveils $10 Billion Late-Stage Fund Targeting AI and Defense
In a Tuesday public announcement, Dallas-headquartered investment firm Disruptive — whose landmark early portfolio bets include Palantir, Airbnb, and Spotify — has closed a $10 billion new vehicle earmarked to back no fewer than 10 late-stage companies, with individual investment checks set to reach as high as $1 billion.
The massive raise ranks among the largest venture capital fund launches of the year to date, with dedicated deployment focus on the uniquely capital-heavy high-growth sectors of artificial intelligence and defense. The Wall Street Journal first broke news of the firm’s fundraising push earlier this month, disclosing that Disruptive had already locked in no less than $7.5 billion in formal capital commitments from limited partners at the time of the initial report.
Founded in 2012 by Alex Davis, grandson of iconic billionaire oil magnate Marvin Davis, Disruptive has historically operated exclusively on a deal-by-deal basis via standalone special purpose vehicles, rather than using the traditional pooled venture fund structure. The new $10 billion pool marks the firm’s first official blind-pool fund, a structure in which investors commit capital upfront without receiving pre-disclosure of exactly which companies the management team will invest in.
Even with its nontraditional operating model to date, Disruptive has made consistent industry headlines in recent years for high-profile deep tech wagers, including support for cutting-edge AI chip startup Groq and viral AI voice generation platform ElevenLabs. Per disclosures the firm shared with its limited partners as reported by Bloomberg, Disruptive has already returned more than $6 billion in total distributions to its backers, generated from roughly $1.9 billion in total capital it has deployed into startup investments across its history.
Per reporting from the Dallas Business Journal, this new $10 billion fund also claims the title of the largest venture capital pool ever raised by a Texas-based firm, marking a major milestone for the state’s fast expanding tech investment ecosystem.
