Apple Unveils iOS 27.2: Major Siri AI Overhaul, Foldable iPhone Duo Additions, Cross-Device Feature Upgrades and Critical Security Patches
Apple has officially rolled out its highly anticipated iOS 27.2 update for compatible iPhone and iPad models, packing sweeping functionality upgrades ranging from expanded Siri AI capabilities to quality-of-life tweaks, accessibility tools, sports viewing features, and hundreds of critical security patches.
Memory-Powered Siri AI Gets Expanded Multilingual Beta Support
The centerpiece of the new update is a massive upgrade to Siri’s AI framework, which now launches public beta support for conversational interactions in five new languages: French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish.
A long-requested new memory function lets the AI assistant retain context from past user conversations to tailor subsequent answers to known personal preferences — a priority development area for all leading AI model developers including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google, whose own assistants have increasingly prioritized long-term user context recall in recent updates. Beyond pulling its own stored chat context, the updated Siri can also tap into rich system data sources including photos attached to Messages threads, calendar event attendee lists, stored voicemails, Safari browsing history, and Safari reading lists to deliver more relevant responses. Users retain full privacy control, with a built-in setting to mark specific apps as excluded from Siri AI’s memory indexing entirely.
Foldable iPhone Duo Gets New Native Feature Additions
While early units of Apple’s debut foldable iPhone Duo have faced widely reported display-related teething issues for first-wave buyers, iOS 27.2 delivers a suite of exclusive new features for the device: native Apple Pencil support across core stock apps including Notes and Preview, for stylus input, sketching and precise document markup. The update also brings a new Edge Light effect that casts a soft targeted glow on the user’s face to drastically improve lighting quality during video calls, even in low-light spaces.
Cross-Device Productivity, Accessibility and Media Upgrades
iOS 27.2 adds a slate of widely requested quality-of-life tools for all supported devices:
For FaceTime users, the new Dual Capture feature for group calls lets users stream feeds from both the front and rear cameras simultaneously, and a dedicated accessibility setting allows users to invite a third-party sign language interpreter or professional live captioner directly into an active call.
Smart in-line suggestions in Messages let users one-tap to convert a text thread detail into a Reminders to-do item or a new Calendar event. Shared Albums also get an overhaul that lets users edit photo captions, add custom comments, and receive automatic alerts when a shared album folder is approaching its expiry date.
The Apple Podcasts app gets a full interface refresh that prioritizes new episodes from followed shows, and pins partially listened-to in-progress episodes at the top of the library to cut down on navigation time.
A brand new Multiview feature for iPhones lets viewers stream up to four concurrent live sports feeds on Apple TV at once, including Major League Soccer matches, U.S.-broadcast Formula 1 races, and Friday Night Baseball doubleheaders during the Major League Baseball season. F1 broadcast viewers can also access multiple separate in-car telemetry and camera feeds side-by-side during race weekends.
Comprehensive Security Patches Backported to Older iOS Versions
Per Apple’s official release documentation, iOS 27.2 ships with more than 160 separate security vulnerability fixes. The vast majority of these bug fixes are backported to the older iOS 26 branch, which still runs on roughly 80% of all active iPhones, so users who have not yet upgraded can still receive critical protection.
Notably, Apple also backported one high-severity zero-day patch all the way to iOS 18, the 2024-released OS version. The company confirmed this specific vulnerability was already being exploited in “an extremely sophisticated attack against specific targeted individuals” running iOS versions prior to iOS 27. This phrasing is Apple’s standard disclosure for exploits leveraged by state-sponsored government spyware or law enforcement forensic tools, though the company declined to share further public details on the threat actors behind the attack or the groups targeted.
